Why Players Choose 400 DPI

400 DPI has a long history in competitive Counter-Strike. It was the standard DPI for optical mice during the early days of CS 1.6 and CSS, and many veteran players carried this setting forward through every iteration of the game. Even today, a significant portion of professional CS2 players continue to use 400 DPI out of habit, preference, or the belief that lower DPI provides a purer sensor signal.

At 400 DPI, the mouse sensor reports fewer data points per inch of movement compared to higher DPI settings. Some players feel this creates a more deliberate and controlled feel, though modern sensors perform well at any DPI. The practical effect is that in-game sensitivity values at 400 DPI are roughly double what they would be at 800 DPI for the same eDPI.

The main consideration with 400 DPI is Windows cursor speed. Many players find 400 DPI too slow for desktop navigation, web browsing, and other non-gaming tasks. This leads some to switch their DPI between gaming and regular use, or to increase their Windows pointer speed to compensate. If this annoys you, 800 DPI achieves the same eDPI with half the sensitivity value and a more comfortable desktop experience.

Typical 400 DPI Sensitivities

At 400 DPI, competitive sensitivities range from about 1.50 to 2.80. The sweet spot for most players is between 1.80 (720 eDPI) and 2.50 (1000 eDPI). Classic settings like 2.00 sensitivity (800 eDPI) remain extremely popular, as does 2.20 (880 eDPI).

eDPI Ranges at 400 DPI

At 400 DPI, reaching even a medium eDPI requires higher sensitivity values. Sensitivities below 1.50 produce eDPI under 600, putting you in the low sensitivity category. The medium range of 600 to 1200 eDPI spans sensitivities from 1.50 to 3.00, which is the entire upper half of the sensitivity range. To exceed 1200 eDPI at 400 DPI, you would need a sensitivity above 3.00, which falls outside the standard range.

This means 400 DPI naturally lends itself to lower eDPI settings. If you prefer a low or medium eDPI, 400 DPI gives you plenty of sensitivity range to work with. If you prefer high eDPI, you would be better served by 1600 DPI or 3200 DPI.

400 DPI vs 800 DPI

The choice between 400 and 800 DPI comes down to personal preference. A sensitivity of 2.00 at 400 DPI produces exactly the same in-game speed as 1.00 at 800 DPI. Both give you 800 eDPI. The gameplay experience is identical. The only differences are the Windows cursor speed and the specific sensitivity number you use in the CS2 settings menu.
